Today Key offers two basic types of cold weather outerwear: “Key” brand and “Polar King” brand. Which brand should you choose? Well, that depends on a variety of factors, but primarily how cold your locality is, how long you will be outside and the type of activity you perform.

First, let’s look at the “Key” brand. The “Key” brand of insulated outerwear has been keeping working men warm for years! Constant improvements to the brand have made it a favorite for generations of wearers.

Today Key insulated jackets, coats and bib overalls all feature an outer shell constructed of 100% cotton, heavy 12 oz. duck fabric. This does a better job of breaking the wind and also provides a longer service life than competitor’s jackets in the same class that use lighter-weight 10 oz. fabric. Under the shell is 4 ounces of bonded polyester fiberfill insulation for warmth. A smooth taffeta lining in the body, legs and sleeves is for ease-of-movement and easy-on/easy-off.

If you live and work in conditions where the temperature is generally 20-25 degrees F. or above, and some of these conditions apply:

generally light winds;

you are outside for short periods of time;

you are in and out of a heated space or barn;

you wear a hooded sweatshirt under your jacket;

you are fairly or very active most of the time;

you are a heavier person who generates a lot of body heat;

….then, Key Brand garments will provide warmth and dependable service for you.

And now, Polar King…

Polar King is designed for folks that work in very cold and frigid conditions, and generally for long periods of time.

Polar King insulated jackets, coats, coverall and bib overalls all feature an outer shell constructed of 100% cotton, heavy 12 oz. duck fabric. This does an excellent job of breaking the wind and provides a long service life. Under the shell is 6 ounces of heavyweight bonded polyester fiberfill insulation for warmth. The jacket and coat also feature a fleece lining for maximum warmth in polar-like conditions. A smooth taffeta lining in the sleeves is for ease-of-movement and easy-on/easy-off. In Polar King coveralls and bib overalls, this taffeta lining is also featured in the body and legs for ease-of-movement and easy on/off.

If you live and work in conditions where the temperature is generally under 20 degrees F. and many times below zero, and some of these conditions apply:

generally windy or strong gusts;

you are out in the cold for many hours;

many times you have little physical activity;

you work in snow cover;

you work outside in winter storms;

you work alone in cold conditions;

….then, Polar King Brand garments will provide plenty of warmth and dependable service for you.

Remember, these are general conditions and recommendations. But, if you work above the snow line on a consistent basis or are in very cold temperatures for extended periods of time….we recommend Polar King grade garments for your consideration.

Many people mistakenly view the “bib” on a pair of Key Imperial Bib Overalls as simply a way to protect the shirt from dirt and wear & tear. Although the bib does provide this protection, it offers the wearer much more!

If one takes a good look at the bib itself, you will see a variety of features that add great utility to the garment and are appreciated by the wearer:

The “Watch” Fob

If you carry a pocket watch and have a safety strap or chain attached to the watch — this is where you would attach the chain to the bib. Other items with a strap, chain or secure clip may be attached here.

Just below the snap on one of the bib pockets is a vertical opening into a pocket. This is the pocket where you would store your watch or other item.

A lot of people use this pocket for a small tape measure, standard ball point pen, small calibration tool or screwdriver, and even pieces of hard candy!

The Pencil Stalls

The two horizontal button holes are specifically designed to hold Pencils, Pens or other objects of a similar shape.

The top pencil stall is rather obvious, but the bottom Pencil Stall seems rather low to be functional… until you understand that some carpenters use their pencils right down to the very end!

The Imperial “Bib” Pockets

Two large bib pockets. One with Snap Closure (on right) and the other (on left) with a Security Flap with Snap Closure to protect and secure your valuables.

The security flap is a great feature found exclusively on Key Imperial Bib Overalls (at least I am not aware of other major brands that provide this valuable feature). If you have valuable items that need to be with you on the job and you can’t tolerate them falling out of your pocket, this is the secure place for them!

The Coin Pocket

A Coin Pocket, or alternative Watch Pocket, is located just below the bib and on right side at the entry to the right pocket.

This is the traditional location for storage of a pocket watch on pants or dungarees.

Since bib overalls provide another place for pocket watches, many folks use this small pocket for a few coins or other small items used frequently on the job.

The Side Button Closures

Located just below the bib at the waistband and below, these closures open easily for your overalls on and off, and stay closed to keep dirt out.

Many folks also use them as Ventilators: open in hot weather to stay cooler and closed in cool weather to stay warmer. Another frequent use is to attach a sturdy metal ring thru the button hole to use as a key chain attachment.

When laundering your overalls we recommend attaching the wire loop ends of the suspender straps to the bottom buttons on each side of the overall, then closing the side buttons to secure and protect the wire loops in the washer and dryer.

Key puts plenty of belt loops on its dungarees and jeans. But to answer the question, we need to know the size because Key installs more belt loops as the waist size increases. So, here is the belt loop count:
For Waist Sizes 28 to 33 there are 5 belt loops,
For Waist Sizes 34 to 46 there are 7 belt loops,
For Waist Sizes 48 to 56 there are 9 belt loops.

All Key Belt Loops are double thickness, securely seamed and stitched for long wear, then securely bar tacked to the waistband for strength.

Key 100% cotton garments are constructed to shrink into the stated size on the garment label after repeated laundering.

Key 100% cotton garments are constructed to shrink into the stated size on the garment label after repeated laundering.

This means if you are a 36″ waist, you order a 36″ waist garment. If you are a 46″ waist, you order a 46″ waist garment, and if you are a 60 inch waist, you order a 60″ waist garment. No need to order a larger waist size to accommodate for shrinkage, as you might with other brands of work wear, because Key has engineered the “guess work” out of waist sizing.

Key constructs its garments to accommodate between 3% to 4% shrinkage in its cotton garments. Therefore, when you unpack your Key dungarees, jeans or bib overalls from the box to try them on….the waists may be slightly larger than you expect. As much as 1 to 1-1/2 to 2 inches larger. So before you decide to exchange for a smaller size check out the shrinkage factor. Just multiply the waist size on the size tag of your new Key garment by 1.035 to determine what the pre-shrinkage waist is. Such as: 1.035 x 34 waist = 35.2 inch pre-shinkage waist size. Your new garment waist size will shrink about 1.2 inches after repeated laundering into a 34″ waist. If you are a 58″ waist, your calculation looks like this: 1.035 x 58 waist = 60.03 inch pre-shrinkage waist. Your new garment waist size will shrink a full 2 inches after repeated laundering into the 58″ waist you ordered.

So, use the above calculation to estimate shrinkage. If your new Key garment seems a little large around the waist it will probably be just right after repeated laundering. If it is really large, you may need to exchange. If it is tight out of the box….it will just get smaller after laundering, so you need to exchange.

Please remember to try on all your new garments with the labels attached and make your sizing decision before laundering. Once the labels are removed and the garments laundered we cannot accept your garments back for exchange or credit. If you purchased more than one garment and you are unsure about sizing, you may wish to wear and wash just one garment. After repeated laundering, you may make your sizing judgement on the remaining garments and keep or exchange accordingly.

We hope this information is helpful to our Key Customers!

Rarely during the laundering process a piece of bib overall hardware might be broken. Most susceptible are the two metal Wire Loops at the end of the suspender straps that hook to the buttons on the bib. Damage can occur when the suspender straps are not secured and the Wire Loops continually strike the metal drums inside the washer or dryer.

To prolong the life of your bib overall hardware and the functionality of your Key Garment, we suggest a variety of easy techniques to protect your hardware:

Simply hook the Wire Loop onto the Button on the bib top as you do when you wear your Key bib Overalls. This does keep the Wire Loops in place, but does not protect them from striking the metal portions of the washer or dryer. If the hardware comes apart in the washer, re-secure before placing in the dryer.

Instead of attaching the suspenders to the buttons on the bib top, place the suspenders inside the overall and hook onto the Bottom Side Button, one on each side, then button the Side Buttons over the eye hooks to secure them in place. Be sure to button the Top Side Buttons also.

Open the snaps on the two bib pockets and lay the open part of the Wire Loop around the bottom part of the snap, then close the snap. Secure one Wire Loop on each snap.

Unsnap and open the security flap of the large bib pocket. Lay the two bib suspenders flat, one on top of the other with the insides of the straps facing each other. Then starting at the Wire Loop ends of the suspenders, roll the suspenders into a roll all the way to the end of the suspenders where they attach to the hi-back of the overall. Take the rolled-up suspenders and push them into the open bib pocket. Close the security flap and snap securely. The hardware is now protected by the pocket and should complete the laundering process without damage. If the straps come undone in the washer, roll them up again and secure back into the pocket before putting in the dryer.

You can use the smaller bib pocket without the security flap if you desire. Use the same procedure to roll the suspenders as above. Once you place the rolled suspenders in the smaller pocket, compress the portion of the suspender going out of the pocket so when the snap is closed the suspenders are in the narrower side of the pocket top opening.

Close all the Side Buttons on the overalls. Place an old shoestring or piece of cord thru the hammer loop on the overall, then pass both ends of the cord thru the small opening under the Bottom Side Button and inside the overall. Pass one end of the cord thru both of the Wire Loops at the end of the suspenders (or thru the denim loops a the suspender ends) and tie the cord in a knot that will be easy to untie after laundering. Be sure the cord is tied short enough so the Wire Loop hardware remains inside the body of the overall so the denim can afford protection from metal washer and dryer parts.

We love to get ideas from our Key Bib Overall Wearers. If you have another method of protecting your bib overall hardware that works for you, please share it with us and others.

Thank you!
